The sweltering heat of the Gulf can perhaps be seen from the five photographs at the top of this section, that depict the sun beating down remorselessly and nary a breath of wind to stir the sea.  It was much like the way Samuel Coleridge Taylor saw it in the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner "Day after day, day after day, We stuck, nor breath nor motion; As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted ocean."

To give us some relief HMS Flamingo sailed across the Indian Ocean on visits to Karachi, Bombay and Colombo.  While in Ceylon we enjoyed a well earned break at the Digitalawa Rest Camp.  At Colombo we enjoyed the facilities of the Lakeside Canteen, although Wilf Shippam and Pete Hind were just kidding!

Whilst on passage we crossed the Tropic of Cancer at noon with the sun directly overhead - a unique experience for most of us (left).

Assisting "Wave King"

While exercising with HMS Loch Lomond and other ships, the monotony of the Gulf was interrupted when HMS Flamingo and other ships in company went to the assistance of the tanker Wave King that had experienced fire in the engine room (above) and showing HMS Loch Lomond alongside.

This final picture immediately above is of HMS Flamingo flying her paying off pennant as she leaves Sliema Creek, Malta, en route to Plymouth.
