Parades & People

In rotation according to seniority, each class had to carry out ceremonial guard duties. Here it was 352 & 353 Classes combined under CPO Tel Cottam & PO Tel Briggs. PO Boy Pete McKeown was guard commander and PO Boy Douglas Carr (me) was right hand marker. HMS Ganges Commanding Officer, Captain J.F. Whitfield, can be seen inspecting the guard with Lt G.L.B. Gossage.

From Saturday dhobeying (we didn't have the luxury of washing machines), to high jinks by the guard commander, to commando training, to locker and mess-deck ready for Captain's rounds, life at Ganges was varied to say the least.

Above, liberty-men on the quarter-deck and marching to the buses. Benbow (33 Mess?) prepared for Captain's rounds, decorated for Christmas 1952, and just before Christmas leave.

Some people & places

Some people and places: above a 'run ashore' in Felixstowe, PO Boy Carr, BW Hadley, the Badge Boys mess, PO Tel. Briggs and PO Boy Pete McKeown.  Below we see the playing fields (left), looking across the Parade Ground to the Chief & PO's mess, the Quarter-Deck (remember the autumn leaves?) and the Wardroom

The Queen's Birthday Parade 1952

On Thursday 5th June, 1952, a Review was held in honour of the birthday of Her Majesty the Queen, the Reviewing Officer being Vice-Admiral EW Anstice, C.B., Fifth Sea Lord. Below we see the parade drawn up and passing in review. Beneath the pictures are details of the principal participants.
