Exercises, Banyans & Beirut

| Some ships the likes of which
the Royal Navy will never see again: HMS Manxman, the fast mine layer)

these are (left) pictures of Bermuda's sister ship, HMS Gambia, during
combined exercises, and (right) INS Delhi |

| There were moments of
relaxation, and here are shown some of the Banyan (the naval term for a
picnic) party that sailed to one of the beaches in Corsica. Sub
Lt Haggar is at the helm of the whaler in the picture to the left with PO
Tel Dufty to his right, with myself manning the fore-sheet.
Telegraphist Alloway standing in the picture to the right. |

| During a visit to the Lebanon
(above) we enjoyed a run ashore in Beirut--perhaps a less dangerous place
then than now. Later a group of us managed to secure one of the ship's
whalers for a sailing and swimming trip to one of the beaches. The
pictures to the right show my 'oppo' Dickie Bird sitting at the stern and
also pulling stroke when the wind failed. The picture in the centre is
of me - a trip well remembered because I did not take a shirt and got very
badly sunburned. |
